The courtyard garden at Kernos Centre in Friar Street was in need of attention, as not only did the plants and shrubs need cutting back but the brick floor had become slippery and hazardous for counsellors and clients,
using this entrance. When Andy Howes, from Sudbury In Bloom heard this, he did not hesitate. He galvanised volunteers to come to the centre, at a time not to interfere with clients coming for counselling.
Andy, Julia and Jonathan Price, who have been long-standing volunteers, worked hard together, restoring the garden appearance and making it safe again.
Andy Howe said, “The Kernos Centre provides an indispensable service to the people of Sudbury when they most need help. We at Sudbury in Bloom
always welcome an opportunity to support them in any way we are able.”

Chris Boatwright, Kernos Clinical Director, said, “Sudbury In Bloom had attended the garden before lockdown, planting bulbs, and flowering plants and shrubs, to improve the appearance and environment for everyone working and attending the Kernos Centre. This time they came despite the cold and rain to make it safe for clients who come to Kernos for face -to -face counselling sessions, and we are so grateful to them.”
Chris said, “During lockdown we have been able to continue to support our
clients’ mental, psychological health and wellbeing, by providing video
counselling support online, and by telephone counselling sessions. However, since 1st September, we have provided face-to-face sessions at the Centre, as well as continuing the online and telephone sessions. There has been a really big impact on mental wellbeing, with a huge rise in anxiety caused by lockdown at home, intensifying difficult feelings and thoughts. People are in considerable distress, including suicidal feelings, whilst tackling social isolation and loneliness, often with increased financial
anxieties. Since we opened 17 years ago, the Kernos Centre has received
referrals for over 4,200 local people, aged between 5 and 93 years old. The
service we are providing is a lifeline for so many people.
“Everyone at the Kernos Centre, including children and adults who come to
Kernos for counselling, wants to thank Sudbury in Bloom and all of those who have given us their support so freely this year. “
Kernos receives referrals from GP’s, Schools, Children Centres, Family
Support workers, Wellbeing services, Mental health teams, Suffolk Family
Carers, Housing Societies, & other agencies. Parents, family members, adults and young people can also self refer.
