Counselling for Carers

Caring for an adult family member or close friend due to illness, disability, or age can be deeply meaningful – but it can also be physically, emotionally, and financially demanding.

Many carers find themselves under constant pressure, often putting the needs of others before their own wellbeing.

It is common to feel overwhelmed at times, and support is available to help you manage the challenges that can come with your caring role.

Why You May Need Support

Becoming a carer can be a significant life adjustment, especially if you feel unprepared or unsure of where to turn. Many carers experience a wide range of emotions and difficulties, including:

  • stress and anxiety
  • depression or low mood
  • loneliness or isolation
  • feeling trapped or unable to step away
  • guilt, frustration, or resentment
  • difficulty adjusting to changing roles and responsibilities
  • exhaustion or burnout
  • conflicting emotions about caring responsibilities
  • anticipatory grief (worrying about future loss)
  • fear or uncertainty about the future

It can also feel difficult to ask for help when you feel the person you care for needs support more urgently. Many carers struggle with this sense of responsibility and put their own needs last.

However, your wellbeing matters too, and getting support can benefit both you and the person you care for.

How Counselling Can Help

Our counselling service provides a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly about your experiences as a carer.

Speaking with a trained counsellor can help you:

  • make sense of difficult emotions
  • reduce feelings of stress and overwhelm
  • feel less isolated and more supported
  • explore coping strategies for daily challenges
  • regain balance between caring for others and caring for yourself

Counselling can also help you feel more able to manage the emotional impact of your caring role.

Reaching Out for Support

Many carers delay seeking help because they feel they should cope alone. However, talking to someone can make a significant difference.

You do not have to wait until you are struggling to the point of crisis – support is available when you need it.
