Understanding Stress and Overwhelm

Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure or demanding situations. In small amounts, it can sometimes help us stay focused or motivated. However, when stress becomes too intense or lasts for a long time, it can begin to feel overwhelming and have a negative impact on your mental and physical wellbeing.

Feeling overwhelmed can happen when demands feel greater than your ability to cope. This may affect your thoughts, emotions, body, and behaviour, making everyday tasks feel difficult or unmanageable.

What Can Cause Stress and Overwhelm?

Stress and overwhelm can be triggered by many different situations. These may include:

  • work or academic pressure
  • financial worries
  • relationship difficulties or family conflict
  • major life changes, such as moving home, loss, or illness
  • caring responsibilities
  • ongoing uncertainty or lack of control
  • feeling pressured to meet expectations (from yourself or others)

Stress can build gradually over time or arise suddenly after a difficult event.

How Stress Can Affect You

Stress affects everyone differently, and it can impact both your mind and body.

Emotional and Mental Effects

You may experience:

  • feeling anxious, worried, or on edge
  • irritability or frustration
  • racing thoughts or difficulty switching off
  • feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
  • low mood or emotional exhaustion
  • difficulty concentrating or making decisions

Physical Effects

Stress can also affect your body, including:

  • headaches or muscle tension
  • tiredness or low energy
  • sleep difficulties (trouble falling or staying asleep)
  • changes in appetite
  • rapid heartbeat or feeling physically “shaky”
  • stomach problems or digestive discomfort

Behavioural Effects

You might notice changes in how you behave, such as:

  • avoiding tasks or responsibilities
  • withdrawing from social contact
  • relying on unhealthy coping strategies (such as overeating, alcohol, or substances)
  • struggling to keep up with daily routines

When Stress Feels Overwhelming

When stress builds up, it can feel like everything is happening at once and there is no space to think clearly or recover. You might feel stuck, out of control, or unable to cope with even small tasks.

These feelings are very common, and they do not mean you are failing or weak. They are a sign that you may need support and space to rest and recover.
