More than 110 contestants gathered in Long Melford Village Hall on Friday 28th February to participate in the Kernos Centre’s 13th Annual Quiz Night, during which the teams taking part succeeded in raising a much-needed £1,403 for the Sudbury-based counselling charity.
Chris Helliwell, the Quiz Master of the Cock & Bell in Long Melford, once again volunteered his services as Master of Ceremonies, providing a selection of great quiz questions that made the evening a wonderfully entertaining event. Chris has supported the Kernos Centre in this way for the last 6 years and, during this time, has helped to raise over £8,000; he said: “I really enjoy the Kernos Centre Quiz, and it is for a very good cause, which is why I’m happy to run it each year.”
Organisers, volunteers and friends of the Centre once again freely contributed their services and provided the meals to help make the Quiz Night such an enjoyable and successful evening. Administrator Annabel Wyatt, organiser of the event said: “I would like to thank everyone at Kernos and all our supporting friends who helped by assembling tables and chairs, cooking, providing food, selling raffle tickets and so on. It was a big effort, made by many people, all of whom donated their time and ingredients for free, that was very much appreciated by all.”
Amongst those showing their support by attending the quiz were Sudbury Town Mayor Councillor Robert Spivey and his wife Hilary (left), Sudbury Town Councillor and former Mayor Sue Ayers, and South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge and his wife Emily.
Mayor Robert Spivey said: “It was an excellent evening for an excellent charity. I was very happy to hear that so much was raised”. Councillor Sue Ayers not only donated raffle prizes but once again donated the minced beef for the chilli from the Lavenham Butchers.

Chris Boatwright, Founder and Clinical Director of Kernos, said: “Once again, to find so many people supporting and attending this event is a real example of the community spirit that enables our charity to continue. The Kernos Quiz is not only a fun night but is also a significant contributor to our desperately-needed funding.
“The demand for our counselling services has risen by 80% over the last 5 years, without a commensurate increase in funding to support the demand. The money raised by the Quiz will therefore go towards providing the much-needed counselling support on which so many people in our community depend. We are deeply grateful to all those individuals and organisations who are able to support us in this way.”
